Wayne Smith. All Blacks Coach 2000-2001, 2004-2015.

I have known Mike Cron since the early 1980s. Even back then, he was different to most other players who were moving into coaching. He had a growth mindset, was very curious about all aspects of coaching and was a sharer of ideas.

Since then, Mike has become the best coach I know in world rugby. Notice I didn’t say “forward coach”, as as that puts him in a silo that doesn’t do him justice

Coaching is part science, part art. Mike has always understood that. He used biomechanists early on to help interpret and design player techniques and movements, and has always been at the forefront of coaching methodology. Mike never got stuck in a coaching mold. He’s continually searched for better ways to help his players improve. That sums Mike up best - it’s not about him, it’s about his players achieving mastery.

Even better, Mike has already created a global legacy of sharing ideas, techniques and philosophies with all the best rugby coaches in the world. His goal has never been solely to win games - he’s always done his utmost to ensure the game itself is a winner.
